Dog Drinking Valves
The Edstrom Dog Drinking Valve is suitable for use by any size dog. The reliable operation of the drinking valve means dogs adapt quickly, and always have clean, fresh water available. The valve is made of Stainless Steel and has a 1/2" inch male pipe thread for connection to a water pipe supply line. A brass adapter fitting is included to permit connecting the valve to a standard garden hose spigot as is commonly found on the outside of a home. The Dog Drinking Valve utilizes a silicone rubber diaphragm to provide positive water shut-off, rather than troublesome springs used in competitive units.
When a dog desires to obtain water from the drinking valve, she will lick or bite the valve, which moves the stem. This movement causes it to pivot on one side of the stem's head, lift off the o-ring and allow water to flow to the dog's mouth. When the dog releases the stem, the elastic silicone diaphragm returns the stem head against the o-ring, stopping the flow of water. The dog valve operates on gravity water supply systems or pressurized systems of 3 to 40 psi, and still provides a gentle flow of water to the animal. (If your water pressure is higher, then it is recommended that a pressure regulator be installed to reduce the pressure to 15 psi.)
Although many dogs are naturally curious and will quickly learn how to use the Drinking Valve on their own, other dogs will require a bit of education to learn to accept the Drinking Valve as their source of clean fresh water. To help teach your pet to use the Drinking Valve, remove all other sources of water from the area. Every few hours manually activate the Drinking Valve in front of your dog. Monitor the dog carefully during this training period to confirm that he has learned to operate the Drinking Valve and is getting an adequate supply of water.
If the rate of water being released is too much or too little for your dog, you can easily adjust the flow rate. Turn off the main water supply and remove the valve from the connection. At the rear end of the nipple is a white retainer screw. By tightening (turning clockwise) this retainer screw, the flow rate will be reduced. By loosening (turning counter-clockwise) the flow rate will be increased. Do not turn the screw more than 1/2 turn at a time.
Installation
The dog valve has 1/2"male pipe thread connection and can be installed in any standard 1/2" pipefitting. Mount the valve on a well-secured water line in the horizontal position with the cut bias on the valve face up. It should be mounted at a height just above the shoulder height of the dog.
Service
If the valve fails to discharge water when activated, it is possible that the three holes in the rubber diaphragm have become plugged by contaminants from the water. To correct the problem, remove the retainer screw from the valve and pop out the diaphragm by pushing in on the stem. Clean the diaphragm, making sure the three holes are open. Reassemble the valve and reconnect to the water line.
If the valve leaks or drips, it is possible that a piece of grit has become lodged between the stem head and the o-ring. Disassemble the valve, removing the retainer screw, diaphragm, and stem. Check to see if any particles are lodged on the surface of the o-ring. Clean all parts and reassemble. If cleaning the valve fails to correct the leakage problem, the o-ring and diaphragm should be replaced.
