Valves

The sealing force in Edstrom nipple waterers comes from a silicone rubber diaphragm, which provides the necessary pressure for keeping the valve closed. This prevents water from flowing under the stem head and out of the nipple. Water is dispensed only when the pig moves the stem by biting on it. One side of the stem head lifts off the o-ring, allowing water to flow under it and out to the animal. When the pig releases the end of the stem, the elasticity of the silicone rubber diaphragm pushes the stem head back to the closed position, stopping the flow of water.

Just as in the nursery, finishing hogs need plenty of clean, fresh water to get maximum weight gain. Edstrom Nipple Waterers are made to withstand harsh treatment from hogs and remain trouble-free, saving you money. Tests in several finishing houses have shown an average water savings of .5 gallons per head per day over competitive nipples!

Swine Nursery Watering Chart

1000 hogs x .5/gal/hd/day = 500 gal/day SAVED

500 gal/day x 365 days = 182,500 gallons per year

182,500 gallons per year x $2.10/1000 gallons = $383.25 savings per year

In gestation crates, sows have a tendency to play with nipple waterers. Because of this, sow operations have been hesitant to use nipples. That’s where the Hanging Bracket comes in — it allows the sow to drink easily and naturally by biting on the valve and releasing water into her mouth. But if she tries to play with the waterer, the bracket swings away, preventing her from spilling and wasting water. The nipple waterer in the Hanging Bracket saves water and reduces chances for disease transmission in the continuous open water trough.

We tested this concept in two different gestations:

Sow Gestation Watering

Based on a water cost* of $2.10 per 1000 gallons, yielding a $1,111.42 annual savings per year for a 500 sow nursery house.

500 sows x 2.9/gal/hd/day SAVED=1450 gal/day

1450 gal/day x 365 days= 529,250 gallons per year

529,250 gallons per year x $2.10/1000 gallons= $1,111.42 savings per year

Components:

Nipple Waterers

Edstrom Industries offers eight models of nipples, all made from 303 grade stainless steel.

Hog Nipple

Designed for use by pigs 50 pounds and up. Calibrated to discharge 1.5 quarts per minute at 40 psi.

Sow Nipple

High-capacity nipple especially designed for use by breeding stock. Calibrated to discharge 2.5 quarts per minute at 40 psi.

Sow Trainer Nipple

A special version of the Edstrom Sow Nipple, it has a stainless steel trainer-screw built into the body. By turning in the screw, the nipple can be set to drip slowly, which helps teach sows not accustomed to using nipple waterers to find the water source. Use on reduced water pressures of 15 to 20 psi.

Piglet Nipple

Designed for use by baby pigs through 50 pounds. Calibrated to discharge 1.5 pints per minute at 40 psi.

Piglet Trainer Nipple

A special version of the Edstrom Piglet Nipple, it has a stainless steel trainer-screw built into the body. By turning in the screw, the nipple can be set to drip slowly, which helps teach baby pigs to find the water source in the pen. Use on reduced water pressures of 15 to 20 psi.

Wet Feeder Valve

High-capacity valve designed for vertical mounting in the feeder. Pigs are able to easily activate the valve by touching the stem with their nose, causing water to flow into the pan of the feeder. Factory calibrated to discharge 2 quarts per minute at 40 psi.

Wet Feeder Trainer Valve

A special version of the standard Wet Feeder Valve, this waterer incorporates the popular trainer-screw feature. By turning in the screw, the valve can be made to drip slowly, helping train young animals to find the water source in the feeder. Use on reduced water pressures of 15 to 20 psi.
